In its second generation, the Santa Fe earned Consumer Reports top pick. The third generation, introduced in February 2012, features both a regular version and an extended version.

The 2013 model offers two wheelbase options, including a short, sporty five-seat option and a longer version that can set up to seven passengers. Aesthetic additions include a new grille design, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust and a new body that complements the expanded cargo and passenger space.

The 2013 Santa Fe Sport models are fitted with four-cylinder engines. The standard size is 2.4 L, which produces 190 horsepower. There is an optional 264 horsepower, 2.0l  turbo.

The third generation marks the end to the Santa Fe’s six-cylinder option. This change comes despite the success of the 2010 3.5 L V-6 engine, the same that is used in the Kia Sorento. The 2010 models are available with a six-speed manual transmission and an automatic six-speed transmission. With one of the most efficient powertrains in the second generation, the 2010 version produced much better fuel economy than previous models.

Earlier versions of the second generation, which launched in 2007, closely mimic the Hyundai Sonata. The company favored a more modern look from the first generation and a slightly smaller V-6 engine (3.3 L). This engine model is the same as is found in the Sonata. The V-6 is only available in five-speed automatic and comes standard on the Limited and SE editions. The 3.3 L version produces a better fuel economy at around 19 mpg-US highway and 24 mpg-US city. It comes in both 2WD and AWD. Outside the United States, a 2.2 L diesel engine is available that produces 186 horsepower. The 4WD diesel features a Borg-Warner Torque Management system, which transfers power to the wheels with increased grip as determined by the amount of slip.

The three generations of the Santa Fe offer a variety of engine options that meet most SUV expectations. The V-6 version is no longer in production as a response to higher gas prices and lower incomes. For a roomy SUV with good fuel economy, the Hyundai Santa Fe is worth a test drive.
